Do you feel angry a lot of the time?
Are you worried that your anger is out-of-control?
Is your anger hurting your personal relationships and work?
Do you think you have to get angry to get what you want?
Does your anger cycle continue after the triggering event has passed?
Are you using alcohol or other drugs to try to manage your anger?
Are you are getting angry with your loved-ones, rather than dealing with
the situation that sparked off your anger in the first place?

Anger management is not just about learning relaxation tools or behavioral
modification. Anger is a symptom, not the root cause of your distress.

Anger management and therapy for men in my Denver, Colorado,
counseling and psychotherapy practice:
In our macho world, boys learn to control their feelings, to never cry, and that
violence is a problem-solving method. The one emotion that is supported as part
of manhood is the emotion of anger. Most men are actually very good at
controlling their anger when they need to. Male anger and violence are not about
anger management.  They are rooted in the response toward power and control in
order to legitimize and affirm masculinity.  Anger can be used to justify oppressing
others, to elevate low self-worth, and to hide or displace other emotions such as
using aggression to hide fear, grief and loss, or a sense of powerlessness. Click
here for more information on men's mental health issues.

Anger management and therapy for women in my Denver, Colorado,
counseling and psychotherapy practice:
In general, unlike men, women have been socialized to connect emotionally and,
yet, to not express anger.  If they do express anger, they get labeled and punished
as aggressive, or "bitches", forcing women to deal indirectly with anger problems.
As a result, anger in women is mostly expressed as withdrawal, but can also
appear as blame, resentment, passive-aggressive behavior, or depression (anger
directed at self).  Alternatively, like men, women can also use anger to assert
power, control, and identity, even in the face of or in rebellion to social
condemnation. Not surprisingly, therefore, women can also manifest anger issues
in ways that may be unhealthy to self and relationships.
